Overview: GSS Portal J-1 Exchange Visitor Requests
*As of 1/26/2026, GSS will discontinue the IntlHokies portal for J-1 scholar/student-intern requests and have the requests to be submitted in the new GSS portal.*
In the GSS Portal, you can initiate the following requests:
Requests initiated by the J-1 Scholar
Reason for Request |
Type of J-1 record |
Request must be submitted within 10 days of arrival, for GSS to validate the SEVIS record. The J-1 status will change from Initial to Active upon validation |

In the GSS Portal, you can view and update information:
After logging in, click the pencil icon on your profile to update the existing information. The updates will be subsequently notified to our office.
All available requests for your specific profile type (active vs. initial, scholar vs. student‑intern) will appear in the Requests section. This page will also display your current active requests as well as past requests, whether completed or discontinued. Note some requests can only be initiated by the host department. You can view the description of each request on the page.
In the Documents tab, you will be able to view and download available documents.
