J-1 Check-in Instructions

General Information

J-1 Scholars and Student Interns must check in with Belinda Pauley upon their arrival to Virginia Tech.  Scholars and student interns can see Ms. Pauley without an appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00-11:30AM or by making a special appointment with Ms. Pauley (bpauley@vt.edu).   Remember, you can only check-in after you arrive in the U.S.    Please bring your DS-2019 form, passport and I-94 record to check in.    The same documents will be needed if any J-2 dependents arrived with you.   You may download and print your I-94 record from this website:  https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

Upon check-in, your immigration record will be activated in the SEVIS system. Please note that ISS is only able to activate J-1 status during normal business hours (Monday-Friday from 8AM-5PM except holidays).  If you cannot check in on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00-11:30AM, please make a special appointment with Belinda Pauley (bpauley@vt.edu) to complete your check in process.

During check-in, you will be asked for your physical address where you will be living during your J-1 program and information regarding health and accident insurance that meets the J visa requirements.
