Requesting an Extension

Departments must submit the J-1 extension request at least three weeks prior to the current J-1 program end date, in IntlHokies portal. The “J-1 DS-2019 Extension Request” will ask for the following documents.

• New export compliance review.
• Proof of additional funding for the extension period for J-1 and any J-2 dependents.  Funding must be meet the minimum requirements.
• Copy of passport.
• Copy of current DS-2019 form.

Extensions may be processed up to the maximum period of stay allowed by your J-1 category:

• Short Term Scholar: 6 months
• Student Intern: 12 months
• Research Scholar or Professor: 5 years
